On Monday 12th of November 2018 the Presidential candidate of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN) – Dr. Obiageli Ezekwesili – outlined her road map to uplifting 80 million Nigerians from poverty. In her speech she meticulously presented a well thought out plan for Nigeria’s economic recovery and rejuvenation.
She emphasized the important role the private sector will play in achieving this goal and stated that her administration will focus on providing an enabling environment to attract and retain private sector investment in the economy.
Since I was not able to watch the broadcast live, I took out time to read through the transcript of her speech and based on this I will like to highlight some things we must not take for granted.
Things we must not take for granted
- The use of data. I noticed Dr. Obiageli Ezekwesili paid attention to statistics in driving home her points. She also used data to provide milestones by which her administration can be evaluated by Nigerians. This should not be taken for granted because anyone who is serious about solving any problem must pay attention to data and use same to track progress.
- Attention to detail. As I read through the document it was obvious that Dr. Obiageli Ezekwesili paid attention to every detail related to the drivers of poverty in Nigeria and she made sure to address them clearly. We should pay attention to the different programs like the HAT, TTT, GAS, Suffer-Head Challenge, etc. she proposed and how these initiatives could transform the lives of Nigerians.
- Passion and competence. I might be wrong, but the last time I saw this much passion from a candidate vying for elective position was when the Comrade was contesting for the Governorship seat of Edo State in 2008. I felt the passion for a better Nigeria and a willingness to solve the challenges of the nation in every word Dr. Oby wrote. We must not take such passion for granted. Nigeria needs leaders who are passionate about this country and have the competence to deliver a prosperous nation.
- Signing of Service Level Agreements (SLAs). This got me excited. The fact that Dr. Obiageli Ezekwesili made a commitment to sign SLAs and if initiatives that have potential to raise rate on citizens are not delivered to the satisfaction of the people there will be a refund of monies back to Nigerians. This is really interesting and I believe many Nigerians will agree that this will be the first of its kind in our history.
I know we are used to politicians making promises and renegading on them. I know we have seen so many ‘good’ people turn ‘bad’ after we voted them into office.
In her words, Dr. Obiageli Ezekwesili has said “When I make promises, I do them with the realization that you are tired of broken promises…That is why as a principle; our campaign will only promise what we can deliver, and will deliver what we promised.”
