After Sunday service, Mama Wunmi decided to visit her friend Mama Folarin. “Ore mi , eku ojo meta”, they exchanged greetings… “How is Wunmi doing, I hope she is adjusting well to the hustle and bustle of Lagos.” Folarin’s mother asked. “Yes she is”, said Mama Wunmi, “just that I got to know that she broke up with Folarin a few months ago”, she continued. She narrated how her daughter had already gone ahead to start dating a Nigerian-UK based Disc Jockey, Debo for a few weeks. And felt heartbroken about the seemingly progressing relationship.
Mama Folarin also broke the news about Folarin’s new love interest; she told her friend that she was more than ever before worried about her son’s love interest with Omolara. “That same Omolara, olori buruku omo ye”, said Mama Wunmi. She continued, “she is vile, and a bad influence on anybody. I won’t be surprised, if she is connected with the predicament of Wunmi and Folarin.” Mama Wunmi said that her daughter refused to say what the cause of the breakup was. She said that her daughter was evasive and that she has always known her daughter to be quite an introvert whenever it comes to matters of her personal life and relationship. Mama Folarin interjected, “I am sure Folarin will have an idea or two about the nature of their disagreement”. “I suggest we wait for Folarin to arrive and see what he knows, my son is an extrovert, he will sing like a bird, because I know he loves Wunmi…”
Two hours into the visit, Folarin walked straight in with Omolara. Folarin bowed down to greet his mother, and just as Omolara was about to kneel down to greet, Mama Folarin shouted, “Wo, abi nkan se in, who is your mother, don’t you know who is your mother, se mi jo mama e”. Folarin said “Haba Maami, what has this girl done to you that you will shout at her.” Mama Folarin said, “Please, I want her to leave my house. I built my house with my hard earn money, you have rented your house, she can come and visit you, but as long I am living here she is not welcome.”
At that point Folarin asked Omolara to excuse them; he paid for a taxi to convey her back to her house promising to see her later that day. Folarin got back into the living room and asked his mother what her display was all about. His mother said, “Folarin, let us leave that matter for now, you can see that Wunmi’s mother is here, she is here because we mean well for you and we want to help you. We want to know all you know about Wunmi’s decision to break up of with you. You have to be sincere with us, you are my son, and I know that you still love Wunmi, you have always done.” She continued, “ Son, remember that women are so tender, their hearts are soft, but you can get back with a broken heart only if you keep making an effort, that flicker of love still left in her heart will keep burning.”
Folarin said that it started 3 months back, that he had forgotten to call her on her birthday and that he didn’t tell her he was in London. He said he was on an official trip to London, and was eating out with a friend who had a bit of alcohol to drink. After dinner, he decided to assist the lady to her residence by hailing a taxi and accompanying her friend. When we got to our destination, I was helping her out of the taxi when I saw Wunmi coming from the adjoining street. She walked towards us and without a chance to explain started berating me saying, “Folarin how could you, you forgot my birthday, and now this. You and this drunken girl, so you came all the way to London and you didn’t think it was necessary to tell me.” Folarin apologized and said, “I was about to surprise you by coming to London unannounced, that was why I hadn’t call. Listen love, I only arrived this morning, checked in at the hotel and after the seminar, I met this old friend at the seminar, we decided to have lunch to catch up on old times.” He said that Wunmi interjected, “You expect me to believe all this your excuses and cock and bull story, Omolara, said she was passing by and saw you at the pub that was how I knew you were in London, I didn’t believe her only for me to see you here.” “Wait a minute, did you just say Omolara”, said Mama Wunmi, “how is she involved with this”? She continued. Mama Folarin said, “I was wright all along, I knew that that lady was vile and has never been to no good, my mind just tells me she may have set this up.”
The two women scolded Folarin for what he did; they said it was so selfish of him to forget his girlfriend’s birthday and head to London without informing Wunmi. Wunmi’s mother asked, “Folarin, do you still love Wunmi?” Folarin said he still loved her and was ready to do anything necessary to win her back. ‘Now Folarin”, said his mother, “I think that you need to invite Omolara back here, let us tell us all that she knows. I want to her to tell us all she knows. Is it not strange that you found her cozy arms as soon as you and Wunmi left? Can’t you see that this lady has been up to something?
Mama Folarin asked, “Fola, you still haven’t told us how Omolara knew your itinerary in London?” Folarin replied, “We were on the same flight from Lagos, with this old friend I went drinking with. During the flight I told them that I was going to surprise Wunmi, that I hadn’t informed her of my impending arrival in London.” He continued, “I noticed that when we had arrived London, the old friend of mine become more chatty and friendly and after the seminar, we ended up having Lunch.” “Thank goodness you didn’t go to bed with her; if that is the case then we can still salvage the situation with you and Wunmi”
“I have a plan”, screamed Mama Wunmi, “here is what we will do.”
