The British Prime Minister, Theresa May on Friday May 24th announced her resignation as leader of the Conservative Party with effect from June 7th. The Prime Minister has faced major opposition since she took office with the goal of delivering Brexit; this unfortunately was not achieved in her tenure.

During her speech at 10 Downing Street, May said she has done her best to ensure Brexit happens by submitting proposals for a Brexit deal three times without success.
At the end of her speech, Theresa May became emotional as she said it had been an honour of her life to serve as the second female Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and “I will shortly leave the job that it has been the honour of my life to hold. The second female prime minister, but certainly not the last.”
This decision to resign has been applauded by leaders within her party and global leaders outside the UK. The Conservative party will now face the task of choosing a new leader who will then become Prime Minister. Boris Johnson, an open critic of Theresa May’s strategy for Brexit is been mentioned as one of the top runners for the position of Prime Minister.
