Peter Gregory Obi is a 61 year old Nigerian business tycoon and politician who served as the Governor of Anambra State from 2006 to 2014. On May 2022, he emerged as the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labor party. Peter Obi started his political career in 2003 as a governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in 2003. However, his opponent, Chris Ngige of the People’s Democratic People (PDP) was declared winner. Following his challenge of Ngige’s victory in the court of appeal in March, 2006, Peter Obi was later declared the actual winner of the gubernatorial election. Although, Peter Obi was later impeached by the Anambra State House of Assembly on the 2 November 2006, he challenged the Court of Appeal in Enugu on the 9th of February, 2007 and was reinstated after the court’s ruling.
In a speech where he publicly declared his intention to run as the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labor Party, he stated that he is not aspiring for a political position but to serve Nigeria. This statement earned him a lot of support from many Nigerian youths who coined the term ‘OBIdient’.
So far, Peter Obi’s campaign and the ‘OBIdient’ movement has been a vibrant one, but it has also come with a lot of controversies from some opposing political parties and individuals who believe Peter Obi will not emerge as the winner of the 2023 presidential election. Despite all odds; the negative and subjective comments against Peter Obi emerging as the winner of the forthcoming Presidential election, the ‘OBIdients’ have not wavered in their support for him.
The main question now, among most Nigerians is ‘who will eventually emerge as the winner of the 2023 presidential election?’ More importantly, most Nigerians are keen on having a president who will restore the crumbling economy of the country to its pristine state. Although, Peter Obi’s support from mostly young Nigerians has been unwavering, some persons are still doubtful about the likelihood of Peter Obi’s emerging as the winner of the 2023 Presidential election.
The political activities preceding the forthcoming presidential election and the recent ‘OBIdient’ political support and movement is a wake-up call to Nigerians to vote right in 2023.
