I was at the Palace of the #Sultan of #Sokoto Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar. He is the 20th Sultan of the Sokoto Caliphate.
As the Sultan of Sokoto, Abubakar is the leader of the Qadiriyya sufi order, which is the most important Muslim position in Nigeria and senior to the Emir of Kano, the leader of the most populous Tijaniyya sufi order.

My visit to the Waziri Junaidu History and Culture Museum earlier in the day helped me better understanding the position of the Sultan of Sokoto.
Every Sultan of Sokoto is a descendant of Shehu Usman Dan Fodio who founded the Sokoto caliphate; he was the first Sultan of Sokoto.

I also learnt that Usman Dan Fodio gave authority to some warriors who joined him in the Jihad and asked them to promote Islam in their various territories. These men are those who are called Emirs. Every Emir is a descendant of the warriors who fought the Jihad with Usman Dan Fodio.
