President Donald Trump Survives Impeachment

The United States Senate has acquitted President Donald Trump on two articles of impeachment, putting an end to the historic trial. He was cleared by the U.S. Senate on Wednesday in Washington. In the first charge “abusing power of office” the Senate, mainly controlled by the Republican party, voted 52-48 while in the second charge “obstruction of congress” the Senate voted 53-47. To vote the president out, two-thirds of the majority vote is needed but their vote fell short of the 67 needed to remove President Trump from office.

The impeachment trial began four months ago; President Trump was charged by the Democrats in December with pressuring the Ukrainian government to further investigate former Vice President Joe Biden, a move that is said would enhance his chances of winning the 2020 elections.

President Trump has denied doing anything wrong through out his trial. In his statement he also reacted saying, “The do-nothing Democrats know they can’t beat me, so they had to impeach me.” The statement further read that “this impeachment hoax will go down as the worst miscalculation in American political history.”

Mr Trump also tweeted, “I will be making a public statement tomorrow at 12:00pm from the White House to discuss our Country’s VICTORY on the Impeachment Hoax!”

Mitt Romney, is the first United States Senator in history to vote for the removal of the President from same party, he indicted the President on the charge of abuse of power. He said, “Corrupting an election to keep oneself in office is perhaps the most abusive and destructive violation of one’s oath of office that I can imagine.”

Some Republican Senators, although criticised the President’s behaviour, they concluded that impeaching him was too harsh a judgement.

The Presidential impeachment trial will be recorded the third in America’s history like that of Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton, former United State Presidents, who were impeached but saved by the Senate.

The Democrats have reacted saying,”that the acquittal would further embolden a President whom they depicted as a demagogue.”

Nancy Pelosi, House Speaker, has expressed discontent saying, “The President is an ongoing threat to American democracy and his acquittal showed that both the Senate and Republicans normalized lawlessness.”
