“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.” – St. Augustine.
I love to travel, meet new people, go on adventures and explore cultures. I have been very fortunate to have visited some spectacular cities and experienced some of the wonders of the World. Some of my great memories were formed – standing barely 50 feet from the Statue of Liberty in New York; walking through the masterpiece of one of the Seven Wonders of the World – the Chichen Itza in Mexico; parasailing over the Bahamas; exploring the tiny caves in Olumo Rock where the warriors hid their family during the war; and shark diving in the beautiful clear blue waters in Cape Town.
There is something exhilarating about being in a place you have never been before – dishes to savour; sights to see; people to meet and cultures to explore. Travelling opens your mind to all the possibilities our existence presents and gives you a fresh perspective. There are endless wonders and sights to experience and behold around you – some are only miles away and other continents apart. The beauty of the earth is all around, waiting on you to unravel each piece and savour the experience.
Making travel a way of life can be an affordable venture if properly planned and approached in phases. Travelling should not ‘break the bank’ – you don’t need to spend a fortune to experience new places. Here are a few tips to consider.
- Keep a Travel plan for the year.
Identify the Cities you would like to visit and schedule them in your diary for the year and work towards it. It can be a weekend getaway to Olumo rock; a One-day road trip Badagry; a visit to Gurara falls in Niger state; or that Summer trip to the Seychelles. There are numerous places Nigerians can visit without a Visa – we will look at that in subsequent articles. Commit to going somewhere you have never been before. Explore a new destination every month. A new destination can be somewhere in your City, State, or Country that you have not been before.
Planning also helps you save money on tickets for any local, regional and international flights you intend taking for the year.
- Get a Travel Buddy or 2.
Find one or two like-minded friends who can share in creating those memories and bask in the new experience with you. Travelling is usually better with friends, especially if adventure does not come you to naturally. Include them in your plans and carry them along as well so they can also plan. Travelling with friends will also help reduce the financial responsibility on the trip and creates an opportunity for friends to know themselves better.
Making Travel a way of life requires a conscious, deliberate effort and a genuine commitment which will affect how you prioritize it.
Always remember to look inward – your next new destination can be a few minutes or hours drive away.
If you stay fixed on this column, we will expose ways on how you can continue to make travelling a way of life without feeling the pinch.
I will be sure to bring out the ‘Traveller’ in you.
Bon Voyage
