In recent times, people have been plunged into a period of scarcity because of the coronavirus especially those living in 3rd world countries. So, in these times when offices are shut down, organizations are downsizing, market places and schools are closed, people are barely surviving.
Then again, these are times that abound whether there’s a global pandemic or not and we must all be prepared for it. Much more important is the fact that these times are upon us. Therefore, we must all put the following into consideration if we are to survive this period:-
• Manage what you have wisely: It is very unwise to be wasteful now. Every little resource we have, be it time, money, food, water, light, etc. must be judiciously used. We can’t afford to eat tomorrow’s yam today.
• Reduce your wants: It is the insatiable nature of our wants and needs that mostly give rise to scarcity. To curb this, we must cut down on our wants. Only go for things that are very important and necessary in these times. Avoid extravagance in all its sense and unnecessary activities and lifestyles that increase your wants.
• Find cheap alternatives: We engage in a lot of activities that have alternatives and sometimes, these alternatives are less costly. So, where possible, find cheap alternatives to your activities and even lifestyle. For example, instead of paying for gym sessions, you can opt to jog or walk around your neighborhood, and, instead of eating out, you can cook in.
There is and will always be scarcity as long as human wants remain unlimited. Therefore, we must all strive to make choices that reduce scarcity as much as we can. To ensure our survival through this pandemic, just as we are observing the laws of lock down, social distancing and personal hygiene, we must also manage the resources that are available to us seeing that an end to this pandemic is not yet in sight.
