The Argungu fishing festival is one of the oldest cultural festivals in Nigeria. This festival takes place in Argungu in Kebbi State, 41km and about 30minutes Drive from Birnin Kebbi, the State capital.

This historic cultural event dates back to 1934 as a signal to the end of hostilities, promote peace, Diplomacy and brotherhood.
The high point of this event is the fishing competition which holds on the last day of the festival. It is a competition amongst fishermen from far and wide; wanting to catch the biggest fish in Matan Fada, the river where the contest is staged.
It is my first time here and I look forward to a swell time. The festival showcases different cultural aspects of the Argungu people and the northern region at large. There will be Durbar, wrestling, polo game and other side attractions during the festival.

As at yesterday, I saw different fishing groups come into town. I also noticed a lot of men were making their fishing baskets and nets in preparation for the competition.
Nigeria is a rich country, we are blessed with every kind of resource; human, natural, and cultural, if we get our act together, crude oil prices will no longer determine our economic buoyancy as a nation. Nigeria has a huge tourism potential and we need to be deliberate about harnessing it.
