Battle of Blood: The Legend of Arhuanran is an African historical documentary that breathes new life into one of West Africa’s most legendary kingdoms—the Benin Kingdom. Using powerful visual storytelling, historical reenactments, and interviews with cultural experts, this film retells a forgotten royal rivalry through an African lens.
We are proud to share that Battle of Blood has been officially selected for the Toronto International Nollywood Film Festival (TINFF) 2025—a testament to its cultural significance and production quality. The film is part of a rising wave of African historical documentaries reclaiming indigenous stories and placing them on the global stage.

A Powerful African Historical Documentary Rooted in Truth
At the core of Battle of Blood lies an intense power struggle between two royal brothers in the ancient Benin Kingdom. When one child is denied his birthright at birth, a centuries-old conflict is set in motion—filled with warfare, magic, and betrayal. The boy grows up to be Arhuanran, a giant warrior whose ambition to take the throne drives the epic “Battle of Blood.”
He must face off against his half-brother, the crowned prince, and the prince’s mother—a formidable sorcerer and warrior. This African historical documentary explores how the forces of tradition, loyalty, and personal ambition shaped the kingdom’s fate.
Visual Storytelling Meets Cultural Preservation
This documentary takes an innovative approach to African storytelling by blending dramatized scenes with expert analysis. We collaborated with historians, archaeologists, and leaders within the Benin Kingdom to uncover the untold dimensions of this legend.
Filmed on location at ancient battlefields and palaces, the documentary brings viewers into the heart of West African heritage. Our goal: to preserve and amplify the voices of African communities and share the historical richness of the continent.
Why African Historical Documentaries Matter
As calls grow louder to decolonize education and media, films like Battle of Blood serve as essential tools for cultural reclamation. They reframe Africa not as a continent of tragedy, but as one of resilience, innovation, and glory.
The documentary joins a powerful tradition of films like The Great African Civilizations (PBS) and Africa: The Story of a Continent in highlighting how Africa’s past can shape its future.
