There are eight water-soluble B vitamins and thiamine is one of them.
Functions
- Helps the body change carbohydrate foods into energy
- Promotes normal appetite and digesting
- Helps to maintain a healthy nervous system
Food sources include port, liver, dry beans and peas, whole grain and enriched breads, cereals and nuts. Deficiency in vitamin B1 can result in Beriberi; a muscular weakness, mental confusion, and cardiac abnormalities. In some cases people are hypersensitive to large doses resulting in cardiac abnormalities.
