EbonyLife TV will be off DSTV from the end of July this year. In a statement via her official twitter handle, the CEO of EbonyLife TV, Mo Abudu made this development public. She said, “Remember when we used to wait a whole week to watch our favourite TV shows? Well, those days are gone forever! Now, we can binge on the whole series if we want to. Therefore, we have decided that EbonyLife TV will no longer be available on DStv from 31st July 2020.”
It is not clear if the media house will still be operational for viewing on other satellite TV providers, but pulling out of DSTV is a huge move.
Mo Abudu urged their viewers to “Create your own viewing schedule and watch your favourite EbonyLife shows with our app, EbonyLife ON, available from Play Store or App Store. Subscription from N500 pm (Nigeria) or $2.99 (abroad) for access to our library of over 5000 hrs of series, lifestyle and entertainment. Our flagship series, like Castle & Castle and Sons of the Caliphate are already on Netflix, along with our blockbuster films, like Fifty, The Wedding Party, Chief Daddy and The Royal Hibiscus Hotel. Now you are spoilt for choice – it’s options galore at your convenience!”
This shows that the media company has decided to move its content distribution completely via their mobile App.
EbonyLife TV was launched as a pan-African channel, on 1st July 2013, with a vision to be a global platform for premium African entertainment. The aim of the organization was to create a positive response to the African continent being portrayed in perpetual crisis—war, famine, and corruption. This could be the beginning of other changes that will happen across different sectors as businesses begin the reopen after the corona virus lockdown period.
