The annual BET Awards held on Tuesday the 16th of October 2018. A pre-recorded cypher was aired on the night of the awards which stars Vic Mensa, G Herbo and other artists.
When Vic was interviewed he said “I vehemently reject the trend in hip-hop of championing abusers, and I will not hold my tongue about it, I don’t give a f**k about getting attention, I care about bringing awareness and holding people responsible for their actions.”
Mensa’s cypher included references to late XXX, the rapper said ‘only time you bear arms is in a wife beater, loser. Your favourite rapper is a domestic abuser… XXX we all know you won’t live long. I don’t respect niggas posthumously, homicide ain’t new to me, catch up with Akademiks at your eulogy.’
Well Mensa wasn’t wrong as the late rapper X seemed to have a history of violent crimes, from facing legal issues including the domestic abuse involving his ex-girlfriend Geneva Ayala and aggravated battery of a pregnant woman though these charges have been dropped following his death.
Vic Mensa was criticized not only because Triple X’s death was recent but because his mother was present at the awards to receive her son’s award for Best New Artist. In defence Vic offered his condolences, he said ‘I had no idea a grieving mother would be in the audience to honour her lost son’ but defended his comments about the late rapper’s domestic violence case.
