2018 marks 70 years of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Individuals and organization have made public statements to mark this day.
The UN Secretary General said in his address that: “For 70 years, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights has been a global beacon – shining a light for dignity, equality & well-being” –Antonio Guterres
A senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria tweeted, “The prevailing human rights abuses here;Disobedience to Court orders,spate of arrests of critics,Use of hate speech to stifle free speech on social media, Brutalizations of protesters,violations of right to life,misuse of armed personnel during elections,Terrorism.” ~ Sen. Shehu Sani
His statement highlights the recent human right violations during the current administration in Nigeria.
“We owe it to the next generations to strive for a world where women have voice, freedom and agency and enjoy the same rights as men.” ~ UN Women
We can only hope that more world leaders respect the tenets of the declaration of human rights.
